Free Inquiry #8

This is is the last of my free inquiries for this session. This will be a short retrospection about my navigation inquiry.

I had lots of fun creating this Inquiry because I know it will be so useful for me in the future when I teach navigation. It’s also a starting point because I’ll be able to stem from this and take away feedback after the lessons.

I’m happy I picked this topic because it’s something that I’m familiar with myself, but had never considered teaching it as a practical skill. In the future, I’ll also need to be aware that my lessons can be adapted for any grade level, I’ll just need to adjust the complexity and depth of information.

I found this information online that could supplement my lesson plans for the practical side.

For cultural side, my lesson plan went into detail about diverse cultures and how they would navigate. My goal is to find a book that I can draw from for knowledge about Lekwungen navigation to be central to a lesson plan in the unit.

I think it will be worthwhile to try out the Songees tour, whose tour center can be located in the harbour. This could be very interesting for a field trip with students too!

In other news, not long ago, a CBC article was written on a man named Jeff Clark for his international award winning maps (in British Columbia) ! Some day I would like to buy one of the maps and have it framed for the apartment.

  1. Robert, a great summary and close. The links you provided are great and worth noting. I loved the map-making approach. Hiking the Black Tusk was in my past, but it remains a favourite of mine as well. Thanks for sharing your navigation exploration. I think you students will enjoy that exploration as well.
