Weekly Reflection #1 – A new beginning

Welcome to my EDCL 336 blog! I have lots to say about my first day of class and am excited to become an expert on teaching technology. The first day was a whirlwind of information and possibility. We had to create our blog account and website, a BlueSky account (which I had never heard of before), and gather into a class group and Pod group through WhatsApp. Please mind the slow but sure progress of refining the design of the website. I now need to visualize how the website will appear by the end of this semester. But, the blog posts will advance one at a time.

In terms of my free inquiry project, I am likely to explore the use of GPS technology for outdoor learning. Otherwise, I may decide to choose a subject related to the use of AI as a tool for students to learn in the classroom. I will be certain as soon as with the publication my first open inquiry blog post.

I am curious to what Bluesky can provide for information for us teachers. I will be setting time aside to create a network and discuss with my peers about how they use this application/website.

I am looking forward to visiting the Pacific School of Information and Inquiry this week. I imagine the tour will give a general sense of how the school operates, as well as incite into how students at the secondary grade level adapt to technology. This visit might influence which subject I decide to pick for my open inquiry.

That’s my update for week 1. Stay tuned for what my Open Inquiry blog #1 will have to say.

P.S…. (I didn’t realize immediately that there were prompts):

In terms of benefits of developing a personal learning approach, I think there are many. This is not my first time making a blog, but in the past I have learned on my own how to get by with trial and error. I think its important to stay curious and persistent when learning something new, but I’m also glad to have teaching support in case I get stuck. When we stay persistent, we are able to put push our critical thinking to learn something. These critical thinking skills can also be applied in other disciplines as well.

In terms of pitfalls, well, one can get discouraged or frustrated when a challenge is too complicating or daunting. Its better to break a problem down piece by piece and figure out the challenge in simpler terms.

And finally, on the subject of reimagining education, I would say, why not. There are always improvements to be made and ways of doing things better when possible. Some schools are fully outside, and schools around the world have unique approaches to education. Decolonizing education is important as well. Its important for teachers and schools to be evaluating their practice and staying up to date to create safe, innovative, and productive learning environments.
